Hawkins family next door

In 1910, 2 years after Grace wrote this diary, she was living "next door" to 2 Hawkins families, according to the 1910 census.

Harry Hawkins, born Jan 1871, lived with his wife Marion "Mary" and 3 children in one of the nearby residences.

Sumner "Sum" Hawkins, born Jan 20 1885, lived in another residence with his mother Jennie, born Sep 1842.  Sumner is listed as the head of household.  I got his full birthdate from his WWI draft registration card.  (By that time his wife Mildred, born 1894,  had joined the household.)  I am guessing that Harry Hawkins is Sum's uncle.

There is one diary entry where Grace refers to Mrs Hawkins, and I do not know if she means Mary Hawkins or Jennie Hawkins.

Ironed in a.m. and washed my "merry widow".  I walked down to Cranes' and us girls went to S.S. picnic at Empires.  "Dummy."  "I am going to ride down with Ward when he comes."  Cora "Don't let those girls ride with you!"  We did not want to.  Ha! Ha!  Walked home from Cranes at 9 o'clock.  Met Sum and we had quite a visit.  Uncle Theo and Aunt Mary over in evening and they went spearing.

Saturday, May 16, 1908

I went downtown in p.m. and the Crane girls and I went to the ball game between Ithaca and C.H.S.  9-2 in favor of C.H.S.  A poor fellow from Ithaca got his nose and finger broken.  Bessie rode home with me.  Sum rode down with me.

Bessie C. and I drove downtown in p.m. and I got my hat.  Down to the Park we met Glen M. and he walked uptown with us.  Got home at 6 o'clock and she stayed to supper, then I went apiece with her.  Saw Sum's new puppy.

Washed my wool dress and ironed it.  Mrs Gilbert and Chilt over in a.m.  Sum called in the evening.

Sunday, April 5, 1908

Rained all day.  Bessie and Leah Crane up all day and had a nice visit.  Sum came up and got some liquor for his mother about 9:30.  Ans'd M.A., W.M., and W.H.'s letters.

Winifred and I drove downtown with Della in afternoon.  Went up to the depot to see if Harry was coming up in evening. "Prettily, prettily."  Bernidine Seward.  Ha! Ha! In evening Sum came up but Harry could not because Les did not get back in time.

Transcriber's note:
Since Harry is mentioned in the same sentence as Sum, I am guessing Grace is referring to Harry Hawkins.

Regarding Bernidine Seward, I have looked in census records and family history library, but I can't find anyone by that name.

I also don't know who Les is.
