I went downtown in p.m.  Saw Earl, Mable, and Winnie, and Hazel.  Met Winnie Jackson.  Heard that Felicie Van Liew was married.   Rained in a.m.

Transcriber's notes:
Felicia Van Liew was in the Corunna High School graduating class of 1906, but I have not been able to find a record of her marriage.

I have seen her name spelled Felicie, Felicia, Felice, and the unusual spelling shown November 26 (unless that is a reference to someone else).

The family is referenced in the Corunna Journal 23 January 1908 when Felicia's father passed away.  The newspaper reports that they are living in Bennington, about 9 miles south of Corunna.

Saturday, July 18, 1908

Papa and I went downtown in p.m. and I got Rose's letter so went to train and met her.  Saw Winnie and Hazel.  Sick all night.

Friday, July 10, 1908

W.H. went downtown in p.m.  Earl and I drove to Vernon in the evening.

Thursday, July 9, 1908

Mr Muzzy came to help Papa draw hay.  W.H. and I walked downtown in p.m.  She staid at Belle's for supper and walked home about 9 o'clock.

**Transcriber's note: Mr Muzzy is likely to be Dan Muzzy, the only other Muzzy that Grace references in her 1908 diary.

Wednesday, July 8, 1908

Ironed all a.m.  In p.m. W.H. walked down to Hazel L.'s.  In evening Earl and I went to Pricilla party in casino and Winifred came home with us.  Had a dandy time.  Mama came home in p.m.

Transcriber's note:
Hazel L. is assumed to be Hazel Lowe, because Hazel Lowe and Winnie Humphrey are known to be friends as shown in this newspaper entry.  Any time "Hazel and Winnie" are seen together it is assumed to be Hazel Lowe and Winnie Humphrey.

Sunday, July 5, 1908

Mama and Papa went over to Uncle Charlie's and she stayed.  Glen M. came up in p.m. and we ate watermelon and had a circus.  Earl came about 8:30 and brought 2 qts ice cream.  Had a dandy time but Winifred lost her ring.

Saturday, July 4, 1908

We started to get milk from Hawkins.  We went downtown in p.m. and got Winifred.  Went to ball game between C- and some niggers.  8 to 6 in our favor.  Rained a little.  Got home 7:30.

Sunday, April 12, 1908

Mrs Gilbert over in a.m.  Papa over to Uncle Theo in p.m.  Mrs G came over again in evening.  I had a dandy visit with Will over the phone.  Ans'd W.H. and W.F.C.'s letters.

Sunday, April 5, 1908

Rained all day.  Bessie and Leah Crane up all day and had a nice visit.  Sum came up and got some liquor for his mother about 9:30.  Ans'd M.A., W.M., and W.H.'s letters.

Monday, March 30, 1908

Ans'd W.F.C.'s and Hope's letters.  Went downtown in p.m. with Grandma.  Rec'd W.H.'s letter.  Mrs Gilbert brought some unions (sic) over in evening.

Friday, March 13, 1908

Mama came after me in a.m.  Rec'd W.F.C.'s letter.  Papa and Mama went down to Lantz in p.m. to see the ice go out.  Ans'd W.H.'s letter.  Talked with Will in evening.

Tuesday, March 10, 1908

I went over to Harmon's in afternoon to get some eggs and while there I met Mr and Mrs Beemer and Mrs Fairbanks.  Rode home with Papa who had been downtown.  Had a dandy visit with Billy in evening.  Rec'd W.H.'s letter.

**Transcriber's note: There is only one Mr and Mrs Beemer in the 1907 Corunna directory.  I think it's interesting that George Beemer's occupation is not listed.  He owned Beemer's department store in Corunna.  Is it assumed that everyone knows this already?  There also is only one Mrs Fairbanks listed.

Monday, March 2, 1908

Snowed a little all day.  Rec'd letters from M.A. and Ella S.  Ans'd H.H. and W.H. letters.  Chilt over in p.m.  Grandma mad and hardly said a word all day.  She can get over it just as soon as she wants to for all I care.

Monday, Feb 24, 1908

Washed. Rec'd W.M. and W.H.'s letters.  Ans'd W.M.'s.  Sewed.  Chilt and Mr Nason over in evening.

Sunday, Feb 16, 1908

Alone all day.Wrote letters to Hope, W.C., and W.H.  Talked with W.C. in the evening.

Monday, Feb 10, 1908

Dandy day and warm.  We washed.  Fred Pretti's horses ran away and Mr Derr stopped them.  Rec'd W.H. and Wallie's letters and ans'd W.M.'s letter.

**Transcriber's note: "W.H." is assumed to be Winifred Humphrey throughout Grace's diary.  Winifred lives in Greenville and comes to visit and stays with Grace in July, so they seem to be very friendly.  During the July visit she is still referred to as W.H.

Saturday, Jan 4, 1908

Winifred and I drove downtown with Della in afternoon.  Went up to the depot to see if Harry was coming up in evening. "Prettily, prettily."  Bernidine Seward.  Ha! Ha! In evening Sum came up but Harry could not because Les did not get back in time.

************************************************************************
Transcriber's note:
Since Harry is mentioned in the same sentence as Sum, I am guessing Grace is referring to Harry Hawkins.

In 1910, 2 years after Grace wrote this diary, she was living "next door" to 2 Hawkins families, according to the 1910 census.

Harry Hawkins, born Jan 1871, lived with his wife Marion "Mary" and 3 children in one of the nearby residences.

Sumner "Sum" Hawkins, born Jan 20 1885, lived in another residence with his mother Jennie, born Sep 1842.  Sumner is listed as the head of household.  I got his full birthdate from his WWI draft registration card.  (By that time his wife Mildred, born 1894,  had joined the household.)  I am guessing that Harry Hawkins is Sum's uncle.

Regarding Bernidine Seward, I have looked in census records and family history library, but I can't find anyone by that name.

I also don't know who Les is.

Friday, Jan 3, 1908

Winifred, Grace M., Emma H., and Addie L. came up in afternoon and we went to Chilt's to have fortunes told.  Got back at 10:30.  "I received what Will C. sent to me by Emma." Ha! Ha!

***************************************************************************

Transcriber's notes:
Chilt is Chilton Thompson, age 60, Grace's neighbor "across the street" as we would say today.  See my separate entry describing the Thompson family and property.

Will and Emma are often referenced together in Grace's diary.  She talks to them on the phone.  However, I do not know their relationship and I am not sure if Emma, seen with Will, is the same person as Emma H.

Similarly I do not know who Grace M. and Addie L. are.  Grace M. could possibly be Grace Miller, who our Grace mentions once more in her diary, along with "Emma".

Winifred is likely to be Winifred Humphrey, a friend of Grace's who lives out of town but is close to Grace and comes to visit later over July 4th.  The Corunna Journal (published once a week) Jan 9th edition reports that Winifred Humphrey is in town.

This news item indicates that Miss Etta Berger lives in Lansing.  However, Miss Etta M Berger is shown to be a resident of Corunna in the 1907 city directory, and also still single in Corunna in 1910.  She is 31 years old in 1908, so perhaps she has taken work in Lansing in 1908, or there is more than one Etta Berger in Shiawassee county (though I've only found one).
