Crane family

The Crane family lives nearby in Caledonia, in between the Lantz and Dudeck families, and 2 doors down from the Buckle family.

John Crane is the head of the household, with his wife Katherine Crane.  Leah Crane is the eldest daughter, followed by Bessie Crane, born 3 May 1888.  Grace spends a lot of time with Bessie and at the Crane household.  Bessie's younger brother is Harold Crane, also mentioned in Grace's diary.

Bessie is listed in the 1910 census as "Lizzie", which could be a transcriber error.  Her given name is reported to the State of Michigan as "Bessie" in their birth records, viewable at Family History Library.  In the 1940 census, Bessie is still unmarried and is living in Ann Arbor.

Washed the colored clothes.  I went down to Cranes in p.m. and stayed to supper.  Mama went over to Harmons.  Papa was cutting oats for Uncle Theo and he stayed all night.

Papa took me up to Cranes' at noon and us girls had intended to go to Vernon but it rained all p.m. so went to call on Dolly and found her friend Mr Warren there so we did not stay long.  Papa came after me after supper.

Rec'd W.M.'s letter.  Grandma and I drove downtown in p.m.  I went to see the dressmaker, up to Grandma's house and to Mrs Mills.  Got home at 5 o'clock.  A date with Earl Derham. Ha! Ha!  At 6:30 I walked over to Dolly Long's and in evening Cranes and us girls went to Geo. Ackerson's to a warm sugar social.  An awful crowd and all had a good time.  I helped Ernest Larner work a button-hole and he took me to supper.  I expected Bessie was coming home with me to stay all night but Ward Martin brought me home with his horse and buggy.  "The next house is Roses." Ha! Ha! Got home at 1:30.  Dandy night.
