Corunna Ward 1 residents

The following people can be found in the 1910 Corunna census:

In Corunna Ward 1:

Burr Eveleth, age 33.

Daniel Muzzy, age 64.  Grace also references a "Mr. Muzzy" as opposed to "Dan Muzzy".  I'm not sure if she means the same person.

Frank Peacock, age 62.

Winnie Chapin, age 22.  Winnie's case is unusual, where she is a single girl listed as a "roomer".  In the 1920 census she continues to be listed as a "boarder".  By 1930 she has married and is now Winnie Wallace.  Her parents were still living, and living in Michigan, in 1910, so it is curious as to why she wasn't living "at home". In 1910 she is working as a deputy clerk at the post office.

Next door is another boarder, Romaine Bramwell, age 22.  She is likely our "other" Romaine, who is not Romaine Buckle and has a different birthday from Romaine Buckle.  Romaine Bramwell is working as a teacher in 1910.  In the 1900 census, Romaine Bramwell is living with her widowed mother in Corunna.  Her birth month is listed as February, making it more likely that she is the Romaine whose birthday Grace lists as February 12.  This also could explain why she would leave home and start work when others her age were not.

Both Winnie and Romaine were in the Corunna High School graduating class of 1906, along with Earl and Ray Derham.

Grace's Caledonia neighbors

Here are some other neighbors that Grace mentions in her diary:

The Harmons:
The 1910 census shows them living not too far away.  George and Ella Harmon, and 4 children.  They are farmers.

George and Carrie Ackerson, who gave the well-attended sugar social on April 16.

Mr and Mrs Robert and Annie Fields.  Annie is likely the "Mrs Rob Fields" who visits Grace on Nov 3.

Grandma, Aunt Minnie, Uncle Herb

"Grandma" is Ann Eliza Crandall (1829-1912), 2nd wife of Edward Rose.  In addition to her son Bert Rose (Grace's father), Ann also had another child who survived to adulthood: Minnie Rose (1867-1958).

Minnie married Herbert Towler (1864-1920) and they had 2 children: Edward Herbert Towler (1892-1958) and Mertianna Towler (1894-1977).  The Towlers lived in Minneapolis at the time that this diary was written.

Edward Rose died in January 1906, and it appears to be around that time that "Grandma" began moving back and forth between the homes of her 2 children.  She started out at Bert's home, then lived with the Towlers from approximately October 1906 to July 1907.  She then moved back to Bert's home, but it appears from Grace's diary entries that she again moved out during 1908, and likely went back to the Towlers.

I have a couple of guesses as to how Grace met her future husband, Earl Derham.  One guess is that it was somehow through "Grandma", although it would have been accidental because Grandma was pushing her toward someone named Will, and had been for several years.  Later in their married lives, Earl and Grace would be pharmacists and operate a drugstore together.  During their 1908 courtship, it does seem that Earl works in a drugstore, based on Grace's diary entries.  In the 1910 census, Earl lists his occupation as salesman in a drugstore.  I have a letter from Ann Crandall Rose to Grace in which she indicates that she used to own a building in Corunna, and that she understands it is being turned into a drugstore, a change she approves of.  Did Ann once own the building where Earl works?  I need to research this.

Uncle Theo and Aunt Mary, also Roy and Percy Rose

Uncle Theo is Theodore Rose (1845-1915), who is Grace's father's half-brother.  Grace's father and Theo share the same father (Edward Rose (1817-1906)).  Theo was born of Edward's first wife, who died shortly after Theo's birth.

Theo's son Roy Rose (1882-1957) was born of Theo's first wife, Catherine Brands. Theo and Catherine have 4 children that survived: Percy, Sarah, Roy, and Melbourn. In 1908 Roy was married and living nearby to Grace's home.  Roy's older brother Percy visits a few times, but I am not exactly sure where he was living in 1908. Grace mentions "Milbourn" coming to visit twice...I wonder if that is her cousin Melbourn?

Theo married a second time to Mary Nye, and they have 2 children.  Herbert, born 16 Oct 1891, and Mable, born 2 years later.

Grace has one diary entry that refers only to "Herbert" without any other context to confirm whether that is her cousin.  I assume that it is, but I left the label only as "Herbert".

I have a couple of guesses as to how Grace met her future husband, Earl Derham.  One guess is that she may have met him through Uncle Theo and family.  In the 1910 census, you can see that Theodore Rose happened to live next door to Everett and Alice Dibble.  Mrs Alice Dibble is formerly Alice Derham, Earl's sister.  Perhaps Earl became friendly with the Theo Rose family and was then introduced to Grace.  However, Grace never mentions Alice at all - she never mentions that she and Earl called on Alice for a visit, or anything like that.  So, I'm not sure.

Here are images of a bio written about Theo Rose, with many references to the extended family.

Aunt Louise and family

"Aunt Louise" is Grace's mother's sister, Louise Rigoulot.  She married Lewis Pardonnet in 1897 when she was 18 years old.  They had 4 children: Minnie, Samuel, Clarence, and Eugene.  The Pardonnet family lived relatively close by to Grace's home and visited frequently.

Hawkins family next door

In 1910, 2 years after Grace wrote this diary, she was living "next door" to 2 Hawkins families, according to the 1910 census.

Harry Hawkins, born Jan 1871, lived with his wife Marion "Mary" and 3 children in one of the nearby residences.

Sumner "Sum" Hawkins, born Jan 20 1885, lived in another residence with his mother Jennie, born Sep 1842.  Sumner is listed as the head of household.  I got his full birthdate from his WWI draft registration card.  (By that time his wife Mildred, born 1894,  had joined the household.)  I am guessing that Harry Hawkins is Sum's uncle.

There is one diary entry where Grace refers to Mrs Hawkins, and I do not know if she means Mary Hawkins or Jennie Hawkins.
